I thought I would try something new and sign up to do kids book reviews. We are avid readers and are always reading new books. Well the first book I was offered was not in our age group but I took a chance but I didn’t go in thinking I was going to enjoy a young teen adventure book. I am happy to say I got sucked right into the story and needed to know how it all resolved.
I love that the premise for these stories started out as stories Kim B Clark would tell his children. He tried to work in values like being a good friend, telling the truth being helpful into an adventure plot where kids inherited Red Shirts imbued with magical powers suited to the wearer. These stories left such an impression on his son that he in turn was retelling these stories to his family and being a screenwriter he decided to write a book.
Amy and Mike move form Boston to small town Falton, New Hamshire. There ‘new’ home is actually an old mansion complete with creepy attic which holds a locked trunk. The kids are determined to find out the contents and discover their new friend Sam holds the key. Inside the trunk the three find red shirts which upon wearing give each child a power. Mystery ensues, etc etc.
So if you have a pre-teen/teen who is into this type of story it is well written, has a great pace and keeps you wondering. As mom to two small children my reading takes second place to sleeping but I read this over two nights and had a hard time putting it down.
